Oral Appliances

Athletic Mouth Guards
We recommend that children, adolescents, and adults wear protective mouth guards when participating in athletic events. Mouth guards are oral appliances that not only protect the teeth but the jaw joints as well. If a permanent tooth becomes displaced or knocked out altogether, please call our office so we can address the problem as soon as possible.

Teeth Grinding, Clenching, and Night Guards
Teeth grinding and clenching can wear down the enamel of your teeth as well as contribute to jaw pain. Anxiety and stress-related activities are common culprits for the development and persistence of teeth grinding. A night guard is an oral appliance made of hard plastic that covers your teeth to prevent tooth wear. If you find that you are grinding or clenching your teeth, please contact our office so we can evaluate the causes and provide you with the appropriate therapy.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or jaw joint pain can significantly affect your daily routine. Clicking, popping, and grinding of your jaw joints may be a serious problem especially in the presence of pain. Frequent locking of your jaw joint or difficulty opening or closing your mouth should be addressed by a dental professional. Dr. Helfrich will complete a thorough examination and history of your jaw joint pain in order to determine if any dental therapy is indicated.
